Editorial Photography for a Nonprofit Organization
One of my favorite editorial photography Denver nonprofit assignments is for Denver City Lax.
Here are some photographs from the Denver City Lax Dash last Sunday. An event to kick off the spring lacrosse season, The Dash is an annual fundraising event.
Denver City Lax is a nonprofit organization that brings lacrosse, structure and so much more to underserved youth in Denver inner city neighborhoods. Their mission “is to create educational and enrichment opportunities for youth in underserved Denver neighborhoods through the sport of lacrosse.”
It’s been a real joy for me to have made photographs for City Lax over the years. And The Dash is one of my favorite photoshoots. It’s just so damn heartwarming to see groups of kids from around the metro area come together and run – run for less fortunate kids.

Catching synchronicity in the runners stride is part of the challenge and the fun of photographing The Dash. This year, the original date of The Dash was postponed from February 14th to the 21st due to sub zero temperatures. And true to Colorado’s diverse winter weather, several inched of snow fell on Saturday the 13th. But by race time at 10:00, snow was already melting away.
Nature creates perfect studio lighting when you look for it. Denver editorial photography back-lit with white snow reflection.
Tough to decide if the cropped verion or the un-cropped version is better.
Shooting Denver editorial photography for City Lax is something I look forward to each year. And this year it was particularly heartening to see the turnout. COVID restrictions meant that all runners could not start at once. So there were three countdowns, the first at 10:00 then at 11:30 and the last at 1:00.
Runners in the first group had a clear disadvantage on slick tracks, but the pictures were better.
Some of the youngest runners at the Denver Citylax Dash show passion for the event.
Denver City Lax is a nonprofit organization built from the efforts of countless voluteers. It also has some outstanding leadership. From left – Cher Crichlow, Rod Allison, Ben Allison and Eric Law
